Comprehensive restoration of the 1923 Neoclassical Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park, New York City, for the Central Park Conservancy -- including limestone cleaning and repair, dome waterproofing, stage and proscenium arch reconstruction, precast concrete panel installation, and skylight restoration.
The Naumburg Bandshell is a beloved Neoclassical structure on the Mall in Central Park, New York City. Built in 1923, it has served for more than a century as an outdoor performance venue hosting concerts, civic events, and public gatherings. After decades of continuous use, the bandshell suffered substantial deterioration: masonry damage, missing fixtures, and graffiti concealed beneath layers of overpaint. Graciano Corporation performed a comprehensive restoration of the landmark for the Central Park Conservancy.
The restoration program addressed the bandshell's limestone facade, dome, stage, proscenium arch, cornice, interior spaces, and surrounding stairs. Project manager Nick Foglio noted that cleaning was one of the most demanding aspects, with the team carefully color-matching the original buff-colored limestone to achieve a consistent appearance.
The Naumburg Bandshell has been a fixture of public life in Central Park for more than a hundred years. Its Neoclassical design -- an arched proscenium flanked by curved limestone staircases -- was suited to the formal landscape of the Mall, but the material demanded ongoing care that had been deferred for decades. By the time Graciano began work, the limestone was stained, mechanically damaged, and in places structurally compromised.
The restoration team dismantled and carefully reassembled the curved limestone stairs flanking the stage, maintaining the original geometry and jointing patterns. New precast concrete panels replaced deteriorated sections where fabrication of custom limestone was not warranted, while limestone units requiring replacement were matched to the original buff color and texture. Cleaning employed techniques appropriate to the age and condition of each surface.
Dome waterproofing and roof replacement addressed long-standing moisture infiltration that had contributed to damage in the limestone ceiling and interior spaces. The restored skylight and updated lighting systems were integrated without altering the landmark's Neoclassical character.
