Rockefeller Center is a complex of commercial buildings in Midtown Manhattan, constructed primarily during the 1930s. The buildings are clad in Indiana limestone, a material prized for its durability and fire resistance. Over decades of exposure to New York City's environment, the facades required comprehensive restoration to address soiling, deteriorating mortar, damaged stone, and deteriorated metal features.

Graciano Corporation performed the historic restoration and exterior cleaning of over 2.5 million square feet of Indiana limestone building facade across the Rockefeller Center complex. Because of the site's position at the heart of one of the city's most active commercial districts, much of the work was performed at night to avoid interrupting commerce and pedestrian activity during business hours.

Scope of Work

Services Performed

  • Complete exterior cleaning of the Indiana limestone facades
  • Repointing of masonry joints throughout the complex
  • Marble replacement at deteriorated locations
  • Patching and dutchman installation in damaged stone
  • Restoration of bronze architectural features
  • Installation of storm windows
  • Bird netting installation
  • Lead caps installed on all upward-projecting architectural features, including water tables, cornices, and drip edges

The Indiana Limestone Facade

Indiana limestone is one of the most enduring building materials used in 20th-century American architecture. Its consistency, workability, and neutral tone made it a preferred choice for the architects of Rockefeller Center. Despite its durability, the material accumulates surface soiling and requires periodic repointing and stone repair to maintain both its appearance and its ability to shed water properly.

The restoration at Rockefeller Center required matching existing stone and mortar profiles precisely, both for visual continuity and to meet the requirements of historic preservation at one of New York City's most recognized landmarks.

Night Work Logistics

The Rockefeller Center site presents logistical challenges that few urban projects can match. With major retail, office, media, and entertainment operations running throughout the day, Graciano coordinated the restoration program to concentrate demanding and disruptive work during overnight hours. This scheduling approach minimized impact on the businesses and visitors that rely on the complex and reflected Graciano's ability to manage complex, multi-phase programs in active urban environments.
