Masonry and concrete restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright's landmark residence in Mill Run, PA, for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
Fallingwater is widely considered one of the greatest works of American architecture. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1939 for the Kaufmann family, the residence is built over a waterfall at Bear Run in southwestern Pennsylvania, integrating reinforced concrete cantilevers, native sandstone masonry, and glass to create an inseparable relationship between structure and landscape. The house is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark managed by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
Graciano Corporation performed masonry and concrete restoration at Fallingwater, addressing the inherent challenges of maintaining a structure that incorporates exposed concrete, natural stone, and complex waterproofing systems in a humid woodland environment over multiple decades of service.
Fallingwater's materials present a demanding combination for restorers. The reinforced concrete cantilevers that project dramatically over Bear Run are exposed on three sides and subject to water infiltration, freeze-thaw cycling, and the ongoing stresses that Wright's original design imposed on the structure. The native sandstone masonry walls, quarried locally and laid in irregular courses, require mortar matching that honors the original character of the work. Through-wall flashings and copings at parapets and roofs are critical waterproofing elements where failures have historically allowed water to penetrate the structure.
Work at Fallingwater is conducted under the oversight of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Every material choice -- mortars, concrete repair compounds, coating systems -- must be compatible with the original historic fabric and reversible where possible. Graciano's experience working on National Historic Landmarks made the company well suited to meet these requirements without compromising the landmark's integrity.
Fallingwater's setting in a wooded ravine above Bear Run limits conventional equipment access and requires careful planning of material staging and scaffolding in a terrain that is both ecologically sensitive and logistically demanding. Graciano managed these constraints as part of the project scope, coordinating with the Conservancy to preserve the site and maintain visitor operations throughout the work.
