The 19th Street Condominium is an 11-story luxury residential building featuring a contemporary design that draws its architectural language from the magnificent masonry buildings of New York's early twentieth century. The building's exterior is defined by a granite base and bands of terra cotta at each floor that accent its curtain wall -- materials that reference the craftsmanship and visual weight of New York's finest historic buildings in a modern residential form.

J Companies selected Graciano Corporation to install all exterior granite and terra cotta on the building. Graciano also installed planter walls in the lobby and exterior planters, concrete block partitions in the basement, and concrete block backup for stonework and terra cotta on the first floor. The building began receiving residents in spring 2008.

Granite and Terra Cotta Installation

Graciano crews installed the granite base and terra cotta banding across all eleven stories of the building facade, working from both traditional and swing scaffolding systems. The terra cotta units at each floor level required precise setting to maintain the consistent horizontal band that defines the building's elevation -- the kind of dimensional accuracy that requires experienced masons working from properly designed scaffold positions.

On the first floor, Graciano installed concrete block backup to receive the stonework and terra cotta installation, ensuring the structural substrate was properly prepared before the finish masonry was set. Basement concrete block partitions were also completed as part of the scope.

Lobby and Exterior Planters

In addition to the building's exterior cladding, Graciano installed planter walls in the lobby and exterior planter structures -- elements that provide the building's base with plantings that soften the transition from the public sidewalk to the residential entry. The combination of granite, terra cotta, and planted elements creates an approach that reflects the quality of material that characterizes the building throughout.
